King Kardagg by Themrock King Kardagg by Themrock
I´m not good in digital painting.
I try to get better.

One of my first photoshop coloring tests.
And i don´t feel comfortable with it. I don´t feel "pain" but it´s not my medium now. I try to get into it and to find someone who will teach me.

The character is an veeeery Old one. When i was 15 i had a concept that reminded of Moby Dick just with a Sea monster instead of a whale and Captain Ahab was this guy.

Now i will use his design for my Themrock world. Maybe as a king. Still no new name.

EDIT: I finished it finally in a way where my traditonal heart got satidfaction

It seems your traditional colouring skills translated well into the digital realm. Not too much crit I can give on your technique at all, I'd have been fooled into thinking it was another of your traditionals if I didn't look closely or hadn't read the description. Then again, some of the crit others have given is good, too. It's not like I'm very talented with colouring in the first place to be talking. xD;

You're doing fine. Honestly, digital stuff is the best when you can't tell it's digital. Unless you're doing like, vector work, just aim to make it look exactly like your traditional stuff. :)

He´s a very sinister king. He is the king of the humanoid creatures and has a war with the Spider King (Araniella´s father) who gets killed by General Olodi.

But he will be fooled by the evil 3rd King named Monizrak, a slime mushroom monster.
The bad guy who needs Nymph wood to create a armor to get invulnerable.

Another fact. Humans are stupid and voted a cannibal to their king (Karnagg).
So the humanoids are splitted the ones who follow Karnagg or the ones who live in the nature and created their own politic system.

Extremely good work here Dirk, especially the face, the detail is extraordinary.
But I think some more texture and depth on the hair would perfect it.

Thats some funky fresh hair coloring my friend. Joking aside, the coloration almost looks like it was a tradtional piece of artwork, just finetuned on photoshop a tab so the edges are clean. I really don't have musch negitivity for this piece but if you'd like I can share with you a photoshop script that allows you to take black and white line and add seperate lighting layers along with a backdrop for adding color under the lineart. Art college pays off some times right? *shurg* The only downside to this is that the process is a wee bit time consuming, and has a steep learning curve. I'm just throwing this out there to see if you would like to experiment with it. (Apprently it's a frequently used color process in DC so says my teacher Andy Pearlmen.)

Other then that I think your coloration in the piece was veyr broad, and it looks like you did fine to me with what you've been doing so far.

wow, this is pretty damn good for someone who doesn't digital paint :D

I'd suggest working with building up the features more... use soft, opaque brushes to "shape" the different elements of the face, and always remember that layers can be your best friend :) Blending options and layer options (hard light, colour dodge, etc.) can give you some great effects without being cheesy.

Anyway, beautiful! The colours are just gorgeous  And I like the touch of a human hand left behind here... gives it character.

i thinkthe skin tones are great, it's just the hair doesn't quite have any depth in color or shading.

good photoshop painters who have tutorials are gunnerromantic: [link] and Aaron Goddard: [link] Aaron might still have his color tutorial up, but he might not. he hasn't updated his site at all in the last year.

ill write in english so noone feels left out.
i like the picture from the choice of color and overall style. but since i have a draftsman background, such as yourself, and try to get into painting, such as yourself, i think i know which mistake you are doing right now. at the moment, you stick to your tight lineart and just fill in with some colors in a more or less cell shading style.

try to do a very sketchy drawing and try to build your form layer by layer and think more about shapes than about lineart.

janashi and lolita art posted some work throughs i think. check em out.

I think giving more depth to the hair would help.

Otherwise, this is great.
Excellent colors, and the skin seems almost tangible.

The skin looks pretty damn good to me, but the hair is a bit dodgy and a bit too "plain". Can't really give you any good advice, as I'm not good with digital painting at all. :<

Did you use some texture on the skin or how did you make it look so... alive?

The colors you chose for this character are really cool!

I really don't see any problems with the picture. :0
AllI can say is that when I color, I set the brush at 10% flow and just work in the shadows as dark as it will go. That way the lighter parts ';pop' more.

Considering my paintings aren't very good... I wouldn't listen to me, though.

One of the best ways to learn is to observe other people's paintings, naturally :3

:iconchanny: is right about everything. :D

I personally would suggest trying to work as close to how you work traditionally as possible. This is something I have trouble with but I see the best painters doing. Experiment with creating your own brushes (there should be a "brushes" toolbar in the upper right) and get one that you like and save it. Definitely no dodge and burn, that's been mentioned before.

It's cheaper, but personally I use a *ton* of layers and layer styles. A lot of people discourage this while others say to put EVERYTHING on its own layer, so that's really up to you.

For a test, I'd say this is actually pretty darned good. I like that you're able to take your work into the digital realm without losing any of what makes it your style.

~Channy is right about dodge and burn. It's a tool that's best reserved for digital photography and only serves as a detriment to people learning the program as it hinders their color theory skills. But you've got so much experience with coloring with traditional techniques that I doubt you'll have little trouble picking up Photoshop. It's mainly a matter of practice, and perhaps taking a gander at a tutorial or three.
