Edit: Disliked the digital inks and made this traditional ink version. Also changed the bg color to grey, the character pops out more.

Can I bug you to ask what you're doing your ink and paint with? I really like your stroke variance but I've never had luck finding a pen/ink that won't streak on me if I go over it with marker or watercolor except maybe sharpies.

I've also tried inking in Illustrator with a calligraphy brush and smoothing on a wacom but I never end up with the lines I want.

Traditional: Chinese ink and brush (size 0,1) + all sorts of colors you find in art stores.
Digital: Photoshop Cs2 or CS5 + Painttool SAI

Sai creates lines i like, so try it and maybe it is also yout taste.
